Are there any foods I should be eating more of to ward off the common cold? Brennan J. Robertson's Response Flu season is upon us again, and one way we can ensure not falling victim to the nasty bug is to bolster our immune systems by incorporating more nutritious foods rich in certain vitamins and minerals into our diet. Garlic may not be so kind on the breath but it does wonders for our immune system. Not only does garlic stimulate white blood cells, one of the body's internal defence mechanisms, it may also rid the body of other potential harmful substances such as carcinogens and toxins. Check out carrots and kale. Both of these vegetables are loaded with beta-carotene, a provitamin that our bodies convert to vitamin A. Studies have shown vitamin A is essential in maintaining our epithelial cells, which are the physical barriers we need to prevent against infection. Further, vitamin A increases the number of infection-fighting cells. Pumpkin seeds or sunflower seeds make a great addition to any salad. Both are a source of zinc - a mineral that may potentially decrease the duration of colds while increasing the number of infection-fighting T-cells and killer cells.
