Sleep stealers Alcohol, caffeine, nicotine and stress all have an impact on the number of times we hit snooze in the mornings. One recent study in the Journal of Sleep found that Canadians regularly treat insomnia with alcohol. Night-caps are a bad idea since alcohol disturbs the deep stages of sleep, aggravates snoring and increases the risk of developing sleep apnea. “Although you might feel that you’re knocked out the first night of heavy drinking, alcohol actually suppresses REM. When it wears off the next night it results in a REM rebound, which means that people that are vulnerable to nightmares and night terrors will experience that more on the subsequent night,” he warns.
