What are probiotics and should I be taking them regularly?
Brennan J. Robertson's Response
Probiotics are dietary supplements containing potentially beneficial live organisms, which most often consist of "friendly" bacteria or yeast that are similar to the natural microorganisms found in the human gut.
There is reportedly a wide range of potential benefits to probiotic therapy, from supporting overall health to the treatment of certain illnesses, but research is limited. Advocates of their usage believe probiotics can manage lactose intolerance, prevent colon cancer, lower cholesterol and blood pressure levels, reduce inflammation, improve mineral absorption, and reduce some of the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. Further, some people use probiotics to reduce side effects from antibiotics like gas, cramping, or diarrhea. Many more believe their usage is vital to proper development of the immune system.
